School Social Worker

The Stoney Education Authority invites applications for the position of a School Social Worker for Morley Community School. This is a First Nation School located 50 kms. west of Calgary on the Morley Reserve.

Job Summary:

Working collaboratively and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the school social worker is involved in the provision of social work services to students and families. This includes consultative support to school teams, intervention/counseling with students and families, and liaising with community agencies. The goal of the school social worker is to support students and their families within their journey to a sense of wellbeing, to advocate for students, and be an ally. This position aims to help enhance the overall functioning and academic performance of students, and to assist students who are experiencing difficulties within their environment that may have an impact on their ability to function in school.


The applicant should have a working knowledge of the history of First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples of Canada, and will need to display a sincere desire to work with Indigenous people and community. The position calls for an open mind and willingness to learn about Stoney Nakoda culture and customs.

The position requires that the applicant have knowledge of developmental stages for junior high and high school aged students, and have experience working with domestic violence, suicide, self-harm, addiction/substance use, healthy relationships, anxiety, depression etc. This position may also require delivering classroom-based universal programming or small focused groups of students. The applicant should be flexible and have a strong relationship-focused approach with a broad concept of mental health care and service delivery. It is imperative that the applicant work collaboratively with the other social worker at the school and the entire SEA wellness team. This collaborative stance must take into consideration the multiple systems affecting the student, family and community.

Education, Skills & Qualifications:

Master of Social Work is preferred
Current registration with the Alberta College of Social Work is required
Registered Psychologist or other master level counseling education
Previous experience with counselling middle/high school age students
Previous experience working with Indigenous people
Strong interpersonal and case management skills
Excellent skills in written and oral communication
Ability to work independently and adapt to changing work demands
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Must provide a criminal record and vulnerable section check
Continual education and professional development required to keep practice license valid
