FINANCIAL CONTROLLER POSITION
CANDIDATE PROFILE – PRIORITY CRITERIA
Direct Experience: A knowledgeable accountant with broad operational, financial stewardship and accounting responsibility. This experience will have been acquired in a growing organization such as a private school, college, university or significant for-profit organization. Specific experience will include direct control and responsibility over preparation of the monthly and annual consolidated and individual financial statements for multiple organizations or branches (including international), monthly departmental financial reports as well as overseeing the monthly accounting reconciliations and preparation for annual financial and other audits. Additionally, the candidate will have extensive experience with developing and preparing annual organizational budgets, departmental operating budgets, annual capital budgets, cash flow budgets and reviewing, analyzing and structuring internal accounting and reporting systems and controls.
Education: University degree supplemented with a designation in accounting, preferably a Certified Management Accountant or Chartered Professional Accountant.

NATURE AND SCOPE
The Financial Controller works closely with the Administration Team, Students, Parents, and other Staff Members to manage the daily financial needs of the school including the production of financial reports, maintenance of accounting records, a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of Brookes’ reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with accepted accounting principles. The Financial Controller contributes to the accomplishment of accounting practices and objectives necessary to advance the Mission and Vision of Brookes Education Group.
-To use standard accounting and bookkeeping procedures, to keep an accurate continuous record of the cash and financial position of the school and manage the financial operation of the school so that the institution remains financially stable.
-To prepare a monthly operating statement for the Head of School and the board of trustees.
-To provide a monthly report of expenditures for use of each individual budget center within the school.
-To establish a plan and schedule for the preparation of the annual budget that will permit the setting of the succeeding year’s tuition at a Board of Trustees meeting early in the calendar year.
-To provide for the securing of an annual audit of the school’s financial records and financial positions.
-To oversee all school purchasing, financial investments, banking activities, payroll and benefits program.
-Follow up on difficult past due student accounts as necessary
-Meet with parents to discuss financial issues
-Liaise with external parties on provincial, federal, and annual fiscal audits
-Prepare various year-end schedules and analyses related to the year-end audit
-Create Excel templates for budgeting/forecasting and other processes to streamline processes and improve systems
-Supervise finance staff professionals and provide ongoing guidance and mentoring as required
-To provide staff support, in conjunction with the Head of School, to the Finance Committee and the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.
-To maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and to cover the liability of the school.
-To assist the Head of School with decisions regarding salaries and benefits for all personnel.
-To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
-To support the school and its leadership.
-Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) is required, with an ongoing commitment to professional development
-Strong analytical and financial analysis, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and accountability to internal budgets
-Specific knowledge of enterprise systems, databases and report development
-Strong understanding of current software technology, and the ability to work with IT to make recommendations in system improvements
-Ability to supervise other finance professionals, delegate responsibilities and provide positive guidance in a team environment
-Commitment to maintaining excellent communications with all stakeholders , both internal and external (eg. banks, auditors, vendors)
-Ability to present ideas confidently in presentations and writing
-Hours of work may vary and exceed 40 hours/week from time to time
-Fast paced environment, with multiple project work and frequent changing of priorities
-Small learning community with shared responsibilities across departments
Reports to: Head of School/ Brookes CEO
Compensation: $60-65K per annum
Location: Victoria, Canada
Travel required: Possible visits to other Brookes campus
